In early May, 2007, a young woman made a special trip to Papua New Guinea’s capital Port Moresby to record her debut album with CHM Supersound Studios and late last year the PNG music industry and the rest of Papua New Guinea – whether avid music lovers or just passing through – got a whiff of the great potential that dwells in Yakoba Womsiwor or as she is more commonly referred to ‘Koby’. This was accomplished with the release of her self-titled debut album in December of 2009.
Music is a family affair for Koby, inherited from their father her three other female siblings, like her, have a gift with their vocals and enjoy singing and performing while her brother is into learning to play different musical instruments. In her early twenties, her music journey saw her join the university choir where she was attending classes at
Talent and luck worked together and she caught the eye of music producer Roy Putahena who paved her way further into their local industry by teaming her up with two of their popular local bands – Nayek and Abrezo. She also teamed up with other university students to form the group ‘Papua Original’, who have recorded an album comprising of cover versions from songs made famous by the legendary Black Brothers and even one performed by David Kurni. Koby, being one of Black Brother’s greatest fans, says that one of the highlights of her musical journey would have to be her live performance alongside the Black Brothers.
